GENERAL SUBMISSION & CONTEST GUIDELINES

We seek to publish the best drama, poetry, prose (creative nonfiction and fiction), and visual art created by individuals currently residing in the U.S. All general submissions are read blind by the Sand Hills staff.

National and Student Prize Contests: Our national contest is judged by eminent contemporary writers, and our student contest is judged by the staff.

While we do accept simultaneous submissions. We do not accept previously published work (including self-published material in print or online at personal blogs, social media, or websites). Visual art may be accepted even if they are posted on personal social media or websites. If your work is accepted elsewhere, please withdraw your work from Sand Hills as soon as possible. Genre-specific submission guidelines are available below. Failure to adhere to the guidelines may result in disqualification. For questions about the magazine, email sandhillslitmagau@gmail.com.

PROSE

Please include only one short story or essay per submission. Please submit one short story or essay up to 5,000 words in length. All work must be typed (preferably in 12-point, Times New Roman), double-spaced, and paginated.

POETRY

Please include up to three poems per submission. Please only send us one submission per reading period. All work must be typed (preferably in 12-point, Times New Roman) and single-spaced (not including stanza breaks).

ART

Please include multiple pieces of art (photos, digital art, or comics) per submission. Please only send us one submission per reading period. The acceptable file types are PNG, PDF, or TIFF.

  • Submitting work to Sand Hills is free for current Augusta University students. However, there is a $3 fee for those submitting outside of the university.

  • Typically, most reading and decision periods span over a duration of 3-5 months. The Sand Hills team will contact you with any changes.

  • Occasionally, a submitter’s work could be determined not to be a fit for the specific issue that we are working on, but a great fit for others. The Sand Hills team will reach out with any changes.
